LANAP Greenwich & Stamford CT
Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) targets and removes diseased gum tissue using a specialized dental laser. This innovative laser gum therapy preserves healthy gum tissue and eliminates the need for incisions to treat gum disease in most patients. The laser energy also stimulates the regeneration of bone and gum tissues, promoting the reattachment of the gums to the teeth. This helps to form a stable and healthy attachment between the gums and teeth, reducing periodontal pocket depths and slowing down the progression of gum disease.
Advantages of LANAP Laser Gum Treatment
- More successful regrowth of bone tissue
- Minimizes recurrence of gum disease
- Fewer treatments are needed for excellent results
- No incisions or sutures
- Less pain, bleeding, and swelling
- No need for anything beyond a local anesthetic
- No damage to surrounding tissues
- Quicker recovery
What is the LANAP® Procedure Like?
This minimally invasive procedure does away with the need to cut into the gums with a scalpel or the need for sutures. As a result, patients experience less bleeding, swelling, and pain. Recovery is faster, and complications are rare, making it an excellent alternative to osseous surgery when appropriate.
Dr. Traynor will first evaluate the extent of gum disease using X-rays, 3D imaging, and periodontal measurements. Local anesthetic is then administered to ensure the patient’s comfort during the procedure.
Once the area is numb, a thin laser fiber is inserted in the space between the teeth and gums, clearing away infection. The specific wavelength of laser light penetrates just beyond the tissue surface for effective disinfection and cleaning. Scaling and root planing are performed using the laser to promote gum reattachment. Dr. Traynor then uses the laser to create a fibrin clot to encourage new tissue growth and seal the pocket against future debris and bacteria.
Because LANAP eliminates only diseased tissue and preserves healthy tissue and root structure, it does not damage surrounding tissue. The clot at the base of the teeth encourages the body’s immune system to aid in healing.
After LANAP Surgery
The First 24 Hours After Laser Gum Therapy
There may be mild pain and inflammation for the first 24 hours after laser gum therapy. These can be controlled with Ibuprofen. Avoid any exertion and limit yourself to a liquid diet. Avoid anything very hot or cold, as the area will be sensitive.
If you experience light bleeding, place a steeped, cooled teabag between your teeth, biting down. The tannins in the tea stop the bleeding and encourage the formation of a protective blood clot.
Days 2-7 Following Laser Gum Treatment
Dr. Traynor recommends a soft diet for a week following surgery to avoid irritating the teeth and gums. Yogurt, hummus, mashed potatoes, nut butter, smoothies, and pudding are good examples of healthy soft foods.
Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater every three to four hours. Dissolve ½ teaspoon of salt into a glass of water and gently swish around the mouth. Rather than spitting the water out, lean over the sink and let it drain out. You can brush and floss your teeth but avoid the treatment site. Be sure you take any prescribed antibiotics until they are gone.
We will schedule a follow-up visit with Dr. Traynor about a week after your LANAP treatment to ensure your gums are healing properly. If you experience unexpected symptoms or your pain increases, do not hesitate to contact our office.
Am I a Candidate for LANAP?
If Dr. Traynor or your dentist diagnoses you with moderate to severe gum disease, LANAP may be the most effective treatment for you. It eliminates the need to undergo surgery using scalpels. Patients who take blood thinners or have a blood clotting disorder are excellent candidates for LANAP, as there is little to no bleeding.
If you have moderate to severe gum disease, LANAP can provide relief and keep future oral health problems to a minimum without invasive surgery.
