Bone Regeneration

If you have had gum disease and have suffered some bone loss as a result, bone regeneration is an excellent option to restore the fundamental health and function of your smile. Bone regeneration is a remarkably simple surgical procedure that will both regrow and restore your jawbone and tissue to restore the damage caused by the periodontal disease.

A bone regeneration procedure can be performed to protect your natural teeth and all the soft tissue that is essential in keeping them in place, so you can continue to enjoy and experience an improved quality of life as the result of your increased overall health, function, and appearance.

The bone regeneration treatment can also help you if you are missing teeth or if you do not qualify for dental implants because of bone loss. Dental implants do require a certain amount of jawbone mass prior to the procedure to achieve successful results. Bone regeneration will help you if you have a deteriorated or atrophied jawbone to support your new restorations or to prepare for a dental implant procedure.

Traynor Periodontics & Implants provides a variety of surgical and non-surgical services for the treatment of periodontal issues. We are well-known for our excellent communication style and warm presence. We are extremely effective with all clinical practices due to our consistent engagement with the innovative, technological improvements in the dental industry. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary. Call Traynor Periodontics & Implants at 203-661-5885 with any questions or to make an appointment to discuss bone regeneration.

In recent years, surgical tooth extractions were performed and then not followed up with a bone graft to preserve the shape and size of the jawbone mass (which will always shrink when not stimulated by a tooth’s natural root). When your jawbone shrinks and loses integrity a dental implant cannot be placed until the jawbone mass is surgically rebuilt.

Now procedures have improved. It is now possible for Traynor Periodontics & Implants to perform tooth removal surgery while simultaneously protecting your jawbone tissue from shrinking, as well as regenerating jawbone tissue loss from previous tooth extractions through a procedure known as bone regeneration.

Bone regeneration allows your body to naturally regenerate lost bone

The Benefits of Bone Regeneration

The bone and gum tissue fit together snuggly around each tooth. When dealing with periodontal disease, this supporting tissue and bone is compromised, and pockets will develop around the teeth. If too much bone is lost the tooth will eventually need to be extracted.

Bone regeneration allows your body to naturally regenerate lost bone. By repairing and restoring the damage done by the gum disease, this procedure will dramatically improve your chances of maintaining your natural teeth and will also reduce the probability of future health problems associated with the periodontal disease.

What to expect

The Bone Regeneration Procedure

The process of simultaneously extracting a tooth and then performing a bone grafting procedure is called socket preservation. This procedure prevents jawbone atrophy from ever beginning. First, the extraction of the damaged tooth will be performed in a conservative fashion, to promote quicker healing. To ensure this, Traynor Periodontics & Implants will use microsurgery techniques when removing the affected tooth.

The empty tooth socket is immediately grafted with a mixture of bone grafting materials. Once placed into the socket the surgical site is covered with a collagen barrier. This collagen barrier both contains the graft and separates it from the adjacent gum tissue. The adjoining gum tissue is then carefully advanced, which will reduce the risk of exposing the gum graft.

During a bone regeneration procedure, Traynor Periodontics & Implants will place a biocompatible membrane between the gum and the bone, which acts as a protective barrier. This barrier prevents downgrowth of the gum tissue into the underlying bone as it heals.

In some cases, additional bone graft or tissue-stimulating proteins are added under the membrane to stimulate and encourage your body’s natural ability to regenerate bone and tissue. This membrane around the grafting is designed to dissolve away or reabsorb after a few short weeks.

There are several options that can enhance the support for your teeth and restore your bone to a healthy level. During your personal treatment plan appointment, your team at Traynor Periodontics & Implants will review all the options with you that will restore and maintain your periodontal health.

Aftercare Following a procedure

Bone Regeneration Procedure Aftercare

The bone regeneration procedure usually takes between 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. Because Traynor Periodontics & Implants uses microsurgery techniques for this procedure, there is usually no discomfort or swelling. Most of our patients share that the most inconvenient side effects are not being able to chew on the surgical site for two to three weeks after the bone regeneration procedure and also the waiting for about four months after the bone regeneration procedure for surgical placement of the dental implant.

The cost of your bone regeneration procedure will vary based on your individual needs and your specific treatment plan. We will review with you the cost of your treatment, your insurance coverage, and available payment options before we begin, so that we can together make the best choice for your situation.
