An attractive smile is more than just straight, white teeth

Gum Contouring

When you smile, do you feel like your upper teeth look out of balance or proportionally incorrect, maybe because of too much gum tissue? Do you think that your upper teeth seem short in comparison to the amount of gum tissue displayed when you smile? If so, you may have an aesthetic condition that is commonly called a gummy smile, or excessive gingival display.

A smile like this is common and can easily have a negative effect on your perception of your smile. But this smile can be quickly improved and corrected through a simple treatment called gum contouring.

Traynor Periodontics & Implants provides a variety of surgical and non-surgical services for the treatment of periodontal issues. We are well-known for our excellent communication style and warm presence. We are extremely effective with all clinical practices due to our consistent engagement with the innovative, technological improvements in the dental industry. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary. Call Traynor Periodontics & Implants at 203-661-5885 with any questions or to make an appointment for a review of the benefits of gum contouring for you.

An attractive smile is more than just straight, white teeth. It includes a proper ratio between your teeth and the visible gums. A gummy smile will show more gums than what is considered desirable. If your smile bothers you, gum contouring will restore an aesthetically pleasing balance between your teeth and gums when you smile.

Aesthetic zone or smile line, which is the front teeth showing when your smile

Is It Just an Aesthetic Problem?

The aesthetic zone or smile line, which is the front teeth showing during your smile, is determined by several contributing factors, including:

  • The size and shape of your teeth.
  • The proportional balance of your gum tissues.
  • The size and shape of your lips.
  • Your facial muscles.

An ideal smile line appearance should naturally reveal a smaller amount of gum tissue. Your gum tissue visible during your smile should have a balanced line, with even contours that are also in harmony with your upper lip. This is also a primary reason that people with a gummy smile think their smile is unattractive, feeling reluctant to smile.

Additional underlying conditions could be present. Traynor Periodontics & Implants can exam your gummy smile, identify how your teeth erupted and how your jaw developed, and determine if you have an uncomfortable or improper bite that could affect your long-term oral health.

Options for your treatment at Traynor

Gum Contouring Options

If you believe you may have a gummy smile, visit Traynor Periodontics & Implants for an exam and a review of treatment options. Research studies have determined what is considered excessive gum tissue. They have determined that smiles are attractive when two millimeters or less of gum tissue is visible. At three millimeters or more, the display is excessive. Your team at Traynor Periodontics & Implants will examine your mouth, teeth, and gums to identify the extent of any excessive gum tissue displayed and the probable causes. This evaluation could include either conventional or digital impressions of your teeth and gums. We will also capture x-rays so that your tooth roots and jawbone can be examined as well. Your treatment at Traynor Periodontics & Implants could include one or more of the following:

  • Gum contouring with same-day laser treatments.
  • Surgical sculpting of the gum tissue and bone to create both healthier and more attractive looking gum contours.
  • Surgical lip repositioning.
  • Orthodontics, or braces, to move your teeth into proper positions (in addition to gum contouring).
  • Maxillofacial surgery to reposition the bone.

The professionally trained team at Traynor Periodontics & Implants might perform a crown lengthening procedure, or simple gum contouring, to correct the appearance of your smile. During this procedure, we simply remove excess gum tissue, and maybe some bone, to expose more of the crown of the tooth. This gum contouring procedure can be easily performed on one or even more teeth to create a visually pleasing, even gum line and a more natural looking smile.

The American Academy of Periodontology states that the benefits of gum contouring procedures include increased comfort, increased self-esteem and self-confidence when smiling, speaking, and eating, as well as improved periodontal health.
