Simple, suture-free, and minimally invasive
Pinhole Surgical Technique
The pinhole surgical technique, or PST, is a procedure in which a special needle is used to make small pinholes in the gum tissue of your receding gums. Another tool is then used to gently loosen them. This allows us to reposition the gums to their natural position. We then insert collagen material to stabilize the area of gum recession.
This method is quite simple, suture-free, and minimally invasive.
Receding gums, also called gingival recession, are a widespread problem, especially in older adults. Recent research has found that 88% of people over 65 have gum recession with at least one tooth. The traditional method for the treatment of receding gums has been soft tissue grafting, but you could be reluctant of this treatment because of your anxiety that the grafting might be very painful. This frequent reluctance has spawned another dental innovation, which is the pinhole surgical technique, to treat gum recession.
Traynor Periodontics & Implants provides a variety of surgical and non-surgical services for the treatment of periodontal issues. We are well-known for our excellent communication style and warm presence. We are extremely effective with all clinical practices due to our consistent engagement with the innovative, technological improvements in the dental industry. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary. What are Receding Gums?
Gingival recession is when the gums wear down or pull away from your tooth. This exposes more of the tooth and can even leave the root exposed. An exposed root can lead to tooth sensitivity and weaken the remaining gum tissue surrounding the tooth.
The team at Traynor Periodontics & Implants wants you to have strong, firm, non-moving, healthy gum tissue to surround and protect your teeth. However, gum recession can weaken gum tissue and form unhealthy pockets between the gumline and the teeth. These pockets become perfect spots for the buildup of bacteria which will eventually lead to serious gum disease. If your gum recession is not treated, the structure of your teeth and the surrounding tissue can be permanently damaged, often leading to tooth loss.

Are You a Possible Candidate for the PST?
When considering the pinhole surgical technique, the team at Traynor Periodontics & Implants will determine whether you are a suitable candidate for this procedure. There are specific factors that help us make an informed decision about your candidacy for the pinhole surgical technique. If your receding gums are an aesthetic, visual issue, then the pinhole surgical technique may be a beneficial option. If you have some tooth sensitivity due to receding gums, and it is not caused by active periodontal disease, you will also benefit from this modern treatment option. If you do not smoke or are willing to quit smoking, you are also a viable candidate for this procedure. If you are interested in the pinhole surgical technique, you also need to be in good overall health, which also applies to your dental health. If we conduct and exam and diagnose you with periodontal disease, you might not be a candidate for this technique. If you do not have a sufficient amount of gum tissue to use for this technique, we will not be able to perform the procedure since a certain amount of gum tissue is required for your successful results.
What is the procedure like?
The Procedure for the Pinhole Surgical Technique
The pinhole surgical technique at Traynor Periodontics & Implants is a minimally invasive alternative to treating gum recession. Unlike soft tissue grafting, this treatment begins by creating a tiny pinhole in your gum tissue that is receding. Once the pinhole has been created, we place a small device into the hole. This device will now stretch the gum into a healthier and more suitable position on your tooth. Once we have stretched the gum tissue into the desired position, we insert collagen strips into the pinhole in your gums. Gum grafting uses sutures to keep the gums in place, while these collagen strips keep the gums in place in a far less invasive way and help create new tissue that will ultimately secure the gums in their new permanent location.
