Gum Graft

A gum graft, also called a gingival graft, refers to several surgical periodontal procedures intended to cover an exposed tooth root surface with grafted oral tissue.

A gum graft can be a variety of surgical procedures which, when performed, thicken your gums or cover an exposed tooth root surface to prevent further gum recession. There are a few potential causes for exposed tooth roots but the most common is gum disease. It can also be the result of overly aggressive tooth brushing at home.

Traynor Periodontics & Implants provides a variety of surgical and non-surgical services for the treatment of periodontal issues. We are well-known for our excellent communication style and warm presence. We are extremely effective with all clinical practices due to our consistent engagement with the innovative, technological improvements in the dental industry. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary. Call Traynor Periodontics & Implants at 203-661-5885 with any questions or to make an appointment for a gum graft evaluation.

In addition to enhancing the healthy look of your smile, having a gum grafting procedure performed can also protect your teeth from any negative effects commonly associated with gum recession. Exposed tooth roots are quite often the result of gingival recession from gum disease. There are other causes as well, like trauma.

Gum Graft Options

The Common Types of Gum Grafting

Traynor Periodontics & Implants offers four distinctly different gum grafts that can be performed based upon your specific needs:

post-procedure instructions for a healthy recovery

Gum Grafting Post Procedure

To promote your healthy recovery, it is essential to follow the post-procedure instructions from Traynor Periodontics & Implants. We will instruct you to avoid hard foods for a few weeks following your procedure and to avoid foods or drinks that are extremely hot or extremely cold. We might also prescribe pain medication or antibiotics to help avoid any infection, speed up the recovery process, and minimize any discomfort you could experience. If you follow our recommendations, your gum graft should heal within one or two weeks.

The most important thing you can do after your successful gum graft is to continue to exercise good oral hygiene habits at home. Brush your teeth twice a day and for at least two minutes each time. Also continue flossing daily. We might also recommend antimicrobial mouth rinses.

To compliment these important oral hygiene practices, and to continue to enjoy your healthy smile, be sure to schedule regular visits at Traynor Periodontics & Implants every six months. During these routine exams, we will perform deep cleanings and monitor the condition of your oral health, practicing prevention and catching issues before they develop.
