The goal of your periodontal exam

Periodontal Disease

The goal and objective of a periodontal exam is to examine the health of your gum tissue. We will measure the small pockets that surround your teeth using a special periodontal ruler that Traynor Periodontics & Implants will insert between the tooth and the gum. Every tooth is completely surrounded by soft tissue. This tiny ruler is a narrow tool calibrated with lines marked in millimeters. We will measure the perimeter of each of your teeth and check the depth of every pocket. The depth of these pockets will tell us the condition or disease state of your gum tissue. Pocket depths of 1-3 millimeters, with no bleeding, indicates to us your gums are considered healthy. If your pockets measure deeper than 3 millimeters, it may indeed indicate a problem.

Traynor Periodontics & Implants provides a variety of surgical and non-surgical services for the treatment of periodontal issues. We are well-known for our excellent communication style and warm presence. We are extremely effective with all clinical practices due to our consistent engagement with the innovative, technological improvements in the dental industry. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary. Call Traynor Periodontics & Implants at 203-661-5885 with any questions or to make an appointment for an exam for periodontal disease treatment.

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is the result of infection & inflammation

What is Exactly is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is the direct result of infection and inflammation of the gums that both surround and support your teeth. In the early stage, called gingivitis, your gums become swollen and red, and they might even bleed. In a more serious stage, called periodontitis, your gums will pull away from your teeth, you may experience bone loss, and your teeth can even loosen and fall out. Periodontal disease is usually an issue in adults. Periodontal disease and tooth decay are the two primary issues impacting dental health.

A recent CDC report stated:

  • Almost 50% of adults over the age of 30 have some form of periodontal disease.
  • Periodontal disease actually increases with age, with over 70% of adults 65 years and older having periodontal disease.

Bacteria and gum disease

What Causes Periodontal (Gum) Disease?

There are millions of bacteria in your mouth every single day. If not kept in check with your daily brushing and flossing, some of these bacteria can infect the gum tissue surrounding your teeth. This leads to inflammation around those teeth and gum disease. When the bacteria remain on the teeth long enough, they form a clear sticky film called plaque, which then hardens to tartar (also called calculus). Tartar build-up will spread below the gum line, which makes the teeth more difficult to clean. At this point only a dental health professional (such as those at Traynor Periodontics & Implants) can remove the tartar and stop the periodontal disease progression.

When was your last dental exam?

Why Should You Get a Periodontal Exam?

Every adult should visit the dentist twice a year to have their periodontal health thoroughly assessed and to receive an update about the health of their mouth, teeth, and gums.

If you have one of the following it is a warning sign for gum disease:

  • Bad breath or a bad taste that will not go away.
  • Your gums are swollen or red.
  • Your gums are tender or bleeding.
  • It is painful to chew.
  • You can feel loose teeth.
  • Your teeth have become sensitive.
  • Your gums are pulling away from your teeth.
  • A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite.
  • Any change in the fit of partial dentures.

By scheduling an exam every six months, the team at Traynor Periodontics & Implants will be able to detect any conditions (such as periodontal disease) that require treatment.

Research has proven, that there is a correlation between periodontal disease and other chronic conditions, like cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and diabetes. This is a good reason to treat any inflammation that causes periodontal disease as soon as possible so your entire body stays healthy.

Determining if gum disease is present

What is a Periodontal Exam?

A periodontal examination is a way to assess your periodontal or gum health by examining:

  • The condition of your teeth.
  • The amount of plaque buildup.
  • The health of your gums.
  • Your bite alignment.
  • Your bone structures.
  • Your personal risk factors.

When your team at Traynor Periodontics & Implants performs this evaluation, we always evaluate these six areas to determine if periodontal disease is present.

Diagnosing disease

How is the Exam Performed?

One key component is measuring your pocket depths, because these numbers help us diagnose if there is any infection or tissue loss around your teeth. These numbers will also help us determine what treatment plan is best suited for your individual needs.

Taking care of your ongoing oral health

Good Oral Hygiene Leads to Good Oral Health

Your gums should rarely bleed.

Consider brushing with an electric toothbrush because they are programmed for the desired two minutes. Also floss every day. Other possibilities to improve your home care for your mouth are interproximal cleaners and water picks. Together with your consistent daily practices at home and regular cleanings, exams, and periodontal evaluations at Traynor Periodontics & Implants, we can keep your mouth healthy.
