A simple treatment that can be added following a tooth extraction
Socket Preservation
The overall objective of the entire dental industry begins with always attempting to save your natural teeth and to also replace any missing teeth. During a dental exam, however, Traynor Periodontics & Implants might identify a tooth that cannot be saved or another tooth that requires removal. Extracting teeth could be necessary because of an infection or bone loss caused by gum disease.
The bone that supports the tooth in place, the socket, is often damaged from gum disease or an infection resulting in the shrinkage of the bone socket when the tooth is removed. This shrinkage of socket will create significant irregularities in the tissue where the tooth was. This will make restorations with implants, fixed bridges, or removable dentures difficult to achieve.
Traynor Periodontics & Implants provides a variety of surgical and non-surgical services for the treatment of periodontal issues. We are well-known for our excellent communication style and warm presence. We are extremely effective with all clinical practices due to our consistent engagement with the innovative, technological improvements in the dental industry. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary. Call Traynor Periodontics & Implants at 203-661-5885 with any questions or to make an appointment about socket prevention.

Once a tooth is extracted, the jawbone in the area of that tooth will begin to shrink immediately. The shrinkage is rapid over the first year. Up to 60% of the original width and 40% of the original height of the bone can atrophy during this brief period. The restoration with a dental implant might be impossible or impractical if the extraction socket is left untreated. Socket preservation is a simple treatment that can be added following a tooth extraction. It is completed at the time of an extraction to prepare the site for a dental implant.
The Socket prevention process
The Socket Preservation Procedure
Socket prevention involves a careful tooth extraction to prevent further damage to the surrounding bone, and then the filling of the empty socket with bone grafting material. Quite often a biocompatible barrier membrane is added to prevent the soft tissue from filling the space before new bone can form. The gum tissue is then sutured closed over the bone graft and the barrier membrane. This treatment allows Traynor Periodontics & Implants to control and minimize shrinkage following an extraction.
Eventually both the bone graft and the barrier membrane are resorbed, or dissolved, by your body. Before this occurs, they facilitate and promote the natural ability to repair itself by regenerating lost bone and tissue. It usually takes about four months before the regenerated bone is dense enough to allow the placement of an implant. Sometimes a temporary restoration may be provided at the time the tooth is extracted and then the socket is preserved to maximize your aesthetics, comfort, and functionality.
