Occlusal Adjustment

Occlusion is a dental term that simply means how the teeth in your upper and lower jaw come together, or your bite alignment. When you close your mouth, the complete arch of both your bottom and top teeth should make total contact, all at the same time. When some of your teeth make contact before others do, this is known as malocclusion. If this issue is left uncorrected, the malocclusion will result in extra pressure being placed on some of your teeth, which will then lead to other oral health issues. If you have a malocclusion, you might be a candidate for an occlusal adjustment. This occlusal or bite adjustment is a treatment or several procedures that are designed to realign your bite. This minor correction will lessen the strain on your jawbone and your jaw joints and relieve certain excessive pressure.

Are you a Candidate?

Are You a Candidate for an Occlusal or Bite Adjustment?

To determine if you are a potential candidate for an occlusal adjustment, Traynor Periodontics & Implants will check to see if you have any of the following symptoms:

During an occlusal analysis, we will check for these symptoms to determine what treatment might be beneficial. Traynor Periodontics & Implants will confirm any malocclusion. This imperfect bite will cause other oral issue if left untreated.

disorders or symptoms might be

Possible Side Effects from Malocclusion

You might not be aware that a dental issue is a result of malocclusion. Some of these disorders or symptoms might be:

  • Tooth or jawbone pain.
  • Tooth sensitivity to cold or hot temperatures.
  • Bone or gum recession.
  • Nerve or muscle damage.
  • TMJ temporomandibular joint issues.
  • Teeth grinding, or bruxism.
  • Missing teeth.
  • Chipped, cracked, or damaged teeth.
  • Damage to dental restorations.

These disorders or symptoms may all cause serious side-effects that will also lead to extreme discomfort including:

  • Major headaches or migraines from bite pressure issues.
  • Muscle or joint spasms in your face, jaw, or neck.
  • Aesthetic issues that affect your smile and reduce your self-confidence.

If an occlusal analysis at Traynor Periodontics & Implants reveals issues with your bite, we could recommend an occlusal or bite adjustment. There are different treatments for correcting malocclusion, and we will select the method best suited for your specific situation.

The right procedure for you

Occlusal and Bite Adjustment Procedures

Which treatment option is best for you depends on the source of your problem. To determine which treatment is most beneficial for you, Traynor Periodontics & Implants will make an impression of your bite to identify the source of your issue. Often times malocclusion can be corrected by simply removing microscopic layers from your teeth, which will then allow all your teeth to meet at the same time. As we remove this enamel, we will continue assessing your bite until we are completely satisfied that your occlusion has been corrected. This is a remarkably simple and pain free procedure that usually does not even require any anesthesia.

Another common method for an occlusal adjustment is to repair any broken, chipped, or cracked teeth. In fact, sometimes just replacing old dental fillings can help correct your bite. We can also add dental crowns if we need to give certain teeth more depth, and dental fillings can be used to help reshape teeth that are chipped.

Another treatment commonly used to realign teeth is using an orthodontic device. If Traynor Periodontics & Implants confirms that you have a severe case of misalignment, you might need extended treatment with orthodontic appliances such as braces or Invisalign. If only small movements are needed, we could have an alternative treatment option available to correct the issue in a shorter period.

we recommend the use of a bite guard, mouth guard or something similar

Bite Guards and Other Possible Occlusal or Bite Adjustments

In addition to these adjustments with your team at Traynor Periodontics & Implants, we might recommend the use of a bite guard, mouth guard or something similar. These simple devices will help prevent grinding your teeth (bruxism) and can stop you from clenching your jaw and increasing tension in that joint. Bite guards are recommended if you are suffering from TMJ issues. A bite guard will eliminate the headaches in the morning. We might even recommend you wear the bite guard during the daytime to train your jaw to stay in a relaxed position.

A bite guard is custom made specifically for you to ensure a personally tailored treatment. This treatment option is recommended for all ages. We will take digital 3D images or traditional wax impressions to ensure your guard is created perfectly to fit your bite, customize it in the lab, and then fit it for maximum comfort.
