A traditional bridge alternative

Implant Supported Bridges

With a traditional dental bridge, the restorative teeth are fused to two dental crowns, which are then placed on both sides of the required false teeth, and then these crowns are placed on the adjoining healthy teeth to support and anchor the bridge in place. An implant supported bridge does not require the support of these two neighboring teeth, leaving them completely natural. The artificial crowns are instead mounted and secured by dental implants. The implants are positioned in the jaw in the gap in your smile. If there is not enough jawbone to sufficiently support the dental implants, the jawbone mass can be restored with a simple bone grafting procedure prior to the placement of the actual implants. The bridge’s artificial crowns are attached to the implants’ extensions or abutments, which are small connectors that link the final bridge to the implants (which are now performing like artificial tooth roots).

Traynor Periodontics & Implants provides a variety of surgical and non-surgical services for the treatment of periodontal issues. We are well-known for our excellent communication style and warm presence. We are extremely effective with all clinical practices due to our consistent engagement with the innovative, technological improvements in the dental industry. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary. Call Traynor Periodontics & Implants at 203-661-5885 with any questions or to make an appointment to determine if an implant supported bridge is right for you.

Pros and Cons

The Pros and Cons of an Implant Supported Bridge

The most obvious negatives of an implant-supported bridge are the length of time it takes for all the steps of treatment to be completed, and the final cost of this multi-step procedure (which is more than a traditional bridge). Despite these cons, most of the patients at Traynor Periodontics & Implants will tell you that the pros of an implant supported bridge far outweigh these few cons.

An implant supported bridge will not require any modification to your natural teeth. The two adjoining teeth do not need to undergo any prep and changes to support crowns. The dental implants will support and anchor your bridge securely so that it feels and functions like your natural teeth and is also easy to care for. A dental implant also acts as an artificial tooth root, which naturally stimulates the jawbone to maintain density and prevent any jawbone atrophy. The life expectancy of an implant supported bridge will be far superior to that of a traditional bridge as well. Also, since we are not putting crowns on the two adjoining natural teeth, the restoration looks even more natural.

An implant-supported bridge will require several steps in the process

The Implant Supported Bridge Procedure

An implant-supported bridge will require several steps in the process, which are quite often spaced out over the span of about six to nine months. First, after the initial evaluation at Traynor Periodontics & Implants has confirmed the adequate jawbone density, we surgically place the dental implants into the jawbone at the area of tooth loss. Following this surgery, the bone tissue needs sufficient time to bond, grow, and fuse with the tiny dental implants in a process called osseointegration.

Once the osseointegration is established, Traynor Periodontics & Implants introduces the second stage of treatment. This second procedure allows us to attach abutment posts, or extensions, to the implants. After this quick treatment, the gums will need just two weeks to heal.

The last step of your implant supported bridge treatment involves the actual placement of your custom designed bridge onto the implants. A special compound is used to bond the bridge, with the artificial crowns, to the abutment posts. This now permanently secures your new dental bridge so that it becomes a natural part of your smile.

Receiving a successful implant supported bridge restoration will require several appointments with Traynor Periodontics & Implants. With your preventative oral hygiene care at home and your regular dental checkups every six months, your implant supported bridge will easily last for decades, and you also will be able to smile and eat all the foods you enjoy. Your smile will be perfectly healthy and natural, you will have no stability problems with biting, chewing, and speaking, and the artificial root of the implant maintains the integrity of the jawbone so you will not experience any unnecessary changes in your facial structure.
