Guided Tissue Regeneration

When you have missing teeth, your mouth begins to change. Since there is no longer a tooth anchored into your jawbone, providing constant pressure stimulation as you speak, bite, and chew, the jawbone naturally begins to resorb, or to atrophy. This resorbing process happens immediately and quickly, with some people losing as much as 25% of their jawbone ridge width in that specific spot within the first year of losing a tooth. This jawbone loss over time will change your face shape and compromise the ability to successfully support a dental implant, which is why guided tissue regeneration is so crucial.

The goal and objective of guided tissue regeneration is to encourage the jawbone to grow so that it is able to provide a stable, strong support foundation for a dental implant. Guided tissue regeneration has been studied for decades, with modern innovative technologies making the process even more efficient and more comfortable than ever.

Traynor Periodontics & Implants provides a variety of surgical and non-surgical services for the treatment of periodontal issues. We are well-known for our excellent communication style and warm presence. We are extremely effective with all clinical practices due to our consistent engagement with the innovative, technological improvements in the dental industry. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary. Call Traynor Periodontics & Implants at 203-661-5885 with any questions or to make an appointment for a guided tissue regeneration evaluation.

GTR, or guided tissue regeneration, will help heal periodontal disease

Benefits of Guided Tissue Regeneration

GTR, or guided tissue regeneration, will help heal periodontal disease. It can repair the damage to your gums and your bones. It is always crucial to maintain good dental habits which include brushing twice a day and regular dental visits. Periodontal disease can also be associated with diabetes or cardiovascular issues, so you will want to maintain your efforts to keep yourself healthy.

In addition to promoting dental implant placement, guided tissue regeneration is also used to strengthen and fortify empty sockets where teeth have been lost and to toughen bone tissue that has been damaged by other issues like tumors, cysts, or impacted teeth. Guided tissue regeneration is performed by Traynor Periodontics & Implants to help you if you have congenital dental disorders or if you have suffered from diseases that have affected the strength of any oral tissues or underlying bone.

guided tissue regeneration is a treatment to encourage the bone to grow

The Guided Tissue Regeneration Process

Guided tissue regeneration is a treatment that encourages and promotes bone growth and involves placing a barrier around the gum tissue or tooth to isolate that growth.

Once the specific gum pocket has been meticulously cleaned and sanitized, a bioabsorbable membrane is placed between the bone and gum tissue. Bone grafts, tissue-stimulating proteins, or space holders are placed by your team at Traynor Periodontics & Implants within this membrane to achieve the desired objective. With time, the membrane naturally helps the tissue to grow into the desired shape and then is slowly reabsorbed into your body.

Directly following your guided tissue regeneration, your body reacts by forming a blood clot within the graft, which then releases growth hormones which encourages healing. The clot is then absorbed into your body and replaced with granulation tissue and healthy normal blood vessels. This healthy vascular system quickly creates a weave of bone tissue, forming a healthy, structurally sound base.

The entire process will take several months. Successful guided tissue regeneration with Traynor Periodontics & Implants will prepare your mouth for dental restorations like dental implants which can then last a lifetime.

Once your procedure is completed, Traynor Periodontics & Implants will advise you to do a few things to make sure that you heal and recover properly:

Guided tissue regeneration is not a common procedure

Periodontitis Needs to be Avoided

Periodontitis, or gum disease, happens when your teeth are not cleaned regularly. Plaque full of bacteria forms on your teeth, first creating gingivitis and then developing into periodontitis. Guided tissue regeneration is not a common procedure. All it can do is heal what damage has been done, but that damage will reoccur if your teeth are not kept clean.
