Simple, non-invasive dental procedure

Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is a relatively simple, non-invasive dental procedure to remove excess gum tissue (and sometimes bone) around a tooth. This procedure will expose more of the natural tooth structure, and the treatment might be conducted for a variety of reasons.

You may have too much gum tissue covering your teeth and need to have the proportions adjusted to frame a healthier smile. Or we might find it necessary to remove some of the bone as well as the gum tissue, visually lengthening the crown of the tooth so it looks more aesthetically pleasing.

Traynor Periodontics & Implants provides a variety of surgical and non-surgical services for the treatment of periodontal issues. We are well-known for our excellent communication style and warm presence. We are extremely effective with all clinical practices due to our consistent engagement with the innovative, technological improvements in the dental industry. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary. Call Traynor Periodontics & Implants at 203-661-5885 with any questions or to make an appointment for a crown lengthening evaluation.

Are You a Candidate

for Crown Lengthening?

If you are unhappy with your gummy smile, you could be a candidate for this procedure. The development of excessive gum tissue or an uneven gum line might negatively affect the perception of your smile. We can either reshape or contour your gum line to remove the excess gum tissue and increase the length of your teeth (visually).

It seems like an aesthetic issue, but if you do have a gummy smile, you could have an underlying issue as well. A gummy smile can actually be the result of how your jawbone was initially developed. If an upper jawbone seems to bulge out more than how it should, it can appear to give someone a gummy smile. This is not something that can be initially prevented, but it can result in improper alignment and affect your long-term health.

Another cause for a gummy smile is if you have an overactive upper lip. The muscles responsible for this part of your mouth may pull your upper lip higher than normal. While this does not necessarily mean you have a gummy smile, it can give the illusion that you do. This issue can be treated with this procedure as well.

We Will first examine your mouth, teeth, and gums

Crown Lengthening Procedure

Our team at Traynor Periodontics & Implants will first examine your mouth, teeth, and gums to determine the actual extent of the gum tissue. We will use either a digital or traditional form of an impression to help determine what treatment is best for you. An x-ray will also be taken so we can identify any unhealthy bone or tooth roots that we cannot examine with the naked eye. This examination is important and necessary to make certain you have good oral health and have an adequate amount of healthy jawbone and tooth roots available prior to the procedure being performed. Our best results are from a well-orchestrated plan.

The trained staff at Traynor Periodontics & Implants will now introduce you to the laser. The laser is pinpointed directly at the gum tissue to be removed. The laser produces no heat or vibration, therefore resulting in a painless and amazingly easy treatment. The laser offers yet a second benefit, in that it will also seal up all blood vessels immediately resulting in less bleeding or swelling.

During your crown lengthening procedure, we easily remove the excess gum and bone tissue and reshape the gumline to expose more of your natural teeth. This crown lengthening procedure can be done in a matter of minutes.

Healing Process

The Crown Lengthening Healing Process

Complete healing is usually expected to be finished in just a few days if the gum area being treated is minimal. If there is more extensive treatment needed, the healing will be slightly longer. It will not be necessary to change your activity level or adjust your diet to quicken the healing process. You can begin eating soft foods and return to work the day after your crown lengthening procedure. You should come back in for a follow-up visit 4 to 6 weeks after the procedure.

During your crown lengthening recovery, Traynor Periodontics & Implants will provide you with complete instructions on how to monitor your gumline. When the anesthesia wears off, you might feel some discomfort and, if necessary, we can prescribe you pain relievers (depending on the extent of the procedure).

Cost of the treatment

Crown Lengthening Treatment Cost

As with almost all dental procedures, the final cost for your crown lengthening treatment will be affected by several factors, such as the severity of your case, number of appointments necessary, whether anesthesia was involved, and what type of insurance plan you currently have. We will provide you with a more accurate estimate following your initial evaluation.

Traynor Periodontics & Implants does accept most dental insurance policies, and we can submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance plan so you will know what will be covered. If you are not currently covered by an insurance plan or are concerned about the cost, we will be happy to review other financial arrangements with you.
