Periodontal Surgery

Sometimes, surgery might be necessary to treat specific gum diseases and conditions, such as gingivitis or periodontitis. This surgery is commonly known as periodontal surgery, or gum surgery.

Daily brushing and flossing, along with consistent and regular exams at Traynor Periodontics & Implants, will go a long way in keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Regular oral exams give us the opportunity to proactively detect gum disease in its initial stages and treat it before it causes damage.

Traynor Periodontics & Implants provides a variety of surgical and non-surgical services for the treatment of periodontal issues. We are well-known for our excellent communication style and warm presence. We are extremely effective with all clinical practices due to our consistent engagement with the innovative, technological improvements in the dental industry. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary. Call Traynor Periodontics & Implants at 203-661-5885 with any questions or to make an appointment to examine your periodontal health.

If you neglect or avoid your regular dental visits, untreated gum disease will advance and leave you with infected and damaged gums that might require periodontal surgery.

Are You a Candidate

for Periodontal Surgery?

If you have advanced gum disease around your gums and the tissue that supports your teeth you may be a candidate for periodontal surgery.

If you have gum disease, your symptoms may include:

  • Gums that are swollen, dark red, or bleeding.
  • Pockets that grow deeper between your gums and teeth.
  • Constant bad breath.
  • Pain and discomfort when you chew.
  • Loose teeth.
  • Gums that are receding or pulling away from your teeth.

Treating gum conditions

Some Reasons for Periodontal Surgery

Gingivitis, which is the first stage of gum disease, can most often be treated quickly and reversed successfully. Periodontitis is the next stage of gum disease that develops into inflammation and damages bone and tissue. Periodontitis will require a visit to Traynor Periodontics & Implants, and your treatment could include periodontal surgery. This surgery will reduce gaps between your teeth, promote the regrowth of damaged bone and tissue, prevent tooth loss, and reshape the jawbone to prevent further bacterial growth.

The periodontal surgery procedure will treat the gum disease and any damage it may have caused by:

  • Eliminating bacteria and infection.
  • Regrowing damaged bone and tissue.
  • Preventing tooth loss.
  • Reducing the gaps between gums and teeth, which are called black triangles.
  • Reshaping your jawbone to reduce the risk for any further bacterial growth.

Gum disease is not the only reason for periodontal surgery. You may be interested in cosmetic gum surgery, which is when your gums cover too much of your front teeth, creating a condition called a gummy smile.

The right option for you

Different Types of Periodontal Surgery

The kind of periodontal surgery you will need for your gums will depend on the severity of your gum disease and any specific damage done, or your cosmetic and aesthetic goals. The types of periodontal surgery offered at Traynor Periodontics & Implants include:

Most periodontal surgery procedures usually take around two hours

The Periodontal Surgery Process

Depending on which type of periodontal surgery is performed, a few things could happen. Most periodontal surgery procedures usually take around two hours. In some situations, the surgery may require you to be asleep or partially asleep during the treatment. With other cases, the surgery might only need the use of a local anesthetic to numb your gums.

During any periodontal surgery, the entire team at Traynor Periodontics & Implants will use only sterile equipment, to remove any risk of infection. After making small incisions along your gum line, we lift the gums away from the teeth. This gives us access to the roots so we can remove and clean away all tartar, plaque, or infection.

Following this deep cleaning, Traynor Periodontics & Implants may perform other periodontal procedures, like gum reshaping, bone regeneration, or other treatments that benefit your oral health.

Once your periodontal surgery is complete, we will stitch your gums back into place. We will remove the sutures about a week following surgery.

Recovery time for your periodontal surgery

Periodontal Surgery Aftercare

Recovery time for your periodontal surgery will depend on the procedure, but you will have a follow-up appointment within a few weeks. During your healing period, you will have instructions to follow for quick recovery. Traynor Periodontics & Implants might also prescribe an antibiotic.
For the first few days after surgery, we will ask you to eat soft foods and avoid any strenuous activity. You should also do your best to avoid smoking during your recovery process.
