a procedure to uncovers a permanent tooth that has not erupted
Tooth Exposure
Tooth exposure uncovery is a procedure in which the team at Traynor Periodontics & Implants uncovers a permanent tooth that has not erupted.
To prevent the tooth from being stuck underneath the bone or impacted by the gum, we will first make a small incision through which your tooth can erupt through. The most common reason for tooth exposure occurs when your wisdom teeth fail to erupt because they are at an angle, overlapping with molars, or crowding. It is also common for a child to have permanent teeth that fail to erupt and require the need for tooth exposure uncovery.
Traynor Periodontics & Implants provides a variety of surgical and non-surgical services for the treatment of periodontal issues. We are well-known for our excellent communication style and warm presence. We are extremely effective with all clinical practices due to our consistent engagement with the innovative, technological improvements in the dental industry. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary. Call Traynor Periodontics & Implants at 203-661-5885 with any questions or to make an appointment for tooth exposure uncovery.

Common Causes of Impacted Teeth
An impacted tooth can be the result of a variety of reasons, but the most common causes include:
- Tooth bud is abnormally positioned.
- Root dilacerations.
- Loss of primary canine or prolonged retention.
- Arch length or tooth size discrepancies.
- Ankylosis, the tooth is fused to bone.
What is tooth exposure like?
The Tooth Exposure Uncovery Process
Traynor Periodontics & Implants will first administer a local anesthetic to ensure there is no discomfort during the procedure. We will next expose the tooth surgically. The surgery will only take around 30 minutes, depending on the extent of the impaction. We will make a small incision through the gummy tissue to expose the crown of the tooth, including any surrounding tissue. Some bone tissue might be removed to unblock the pathway if necessary.
When the tooth is exposed through the gum, a small bracket is attached to the tooth, much like braces, and it is then quickly and easily brought into alignment with the balance of the arch of teeth. The tooth should erupt in around two to four months.
Aftercare Following a procedure
Post Procedure Aftercare
Following your tooth exposure uncovery, the team at Traynor Periodontics & Implants will schedule a follow-up visit to make sure that either you or your child are healing properly. It is not unusual to feel a little soreness following this procedure. To help reduce any discomfort, you can take an over-the-counter pain-relieving medication. It will also be best to purchase a soft bristle toothbrush and to be gentle when brushing.
The most important thing you can do after your procedure is to always continue to practice daily, good oral hygiene habits. Brush your teeth twice a day and for at least two minutes each time and continue flossing regularly. It is also advised to schedule preventative checkups every six months with Traynor Periodontics & Implants for regular teeth cleaning and overall evaluations.
