What is sedation?

Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is the addition of medication to encourage you to relax during a dental procedure. It is sometimes called "sleep dentistry", although that is not completely accurate. You will usually be awake with most sedations with the exception of being under general anesthesia.

Minimal sedation

You are awake but relaxed with no anxiety.

Moderate sedation

You might slur your words when speaking and not remember too much of the procedure.

Deep sedation

You are right on the edge of consciousness yet can still be awakened.

General anesthesia

You are totally unconscious.

At Traynor Periodontics & Implants, we offer various dental sedations

The Different Dental Sedation Levels

At Traynor Periodontics & Implants, we offer various dental sedations. Our comprehensive options include four levels, local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and intravenous sedation. The sedation best suited for you will be in response to the potential intensity of procedure you are undergoing. Most often, you will fall into one of three sedation type categories.

Mild Sedation

If your primary objective is to relieve your anxiety, then mild sedation will be the preferred choice. Mild sedation will not only decrease your anxiety level, but it will also reduce the level of discomfort associated with the procedure. In many cases, it eliminates any discomfort or pain completely.

Medium Sedation

If your procedure is more intensive, than a medium sedation is usually performed. When you have medium sedation, you enter into a much deeper state of relaxation. Sometimes this sedation can have the capacity to induce some mild amnesia. If we together choose this as your sedation option, you will not be driving yourself home after your procedure. It will be necessary to have someone available to drive you home.

Heavy Sedation

Some procedures might be conducted better if you are in a deep level of sedation. The simple justification for this is that anything less would make the procedure exceedingly more difficult to perform from a reasonably, practical sense. This is referred to as heavy sedation. The overall experience for you is remarkably similar to a relaxing, deep sleep. You most likely will experience amnesia and be unable to recall any events that have occurred during the procedure. It will also be necessary for you to have someone to drive you home.

The Types of Dental Sedation

There are several methods used at Traynor Periodontics & Implants to provide sedation to you, which include:

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is the most popular and mildest administration of sedation. The administration process involves using a mouthpiece that delivers nitrous oxide and puts you into a relaxed state. Nitrous oxide reduces both the anxiety and discomfort associated with the treatment.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a slightly more intense form of sedation. Oral sedation uses an anxiety medication to place you into a deep state of calm. This effect might last for several hours even after the procedure is completed. You will not be allowed to drive yourself home following the procedure.

IV Sedation

The most intense form of sedation dentistry offered at Traynor Periodontics & Implants is intravenous, or IV Sedation. During this process, you will be put into a state of unconsciousness remarkably close to sleep for a longer period of time. You will experience amnesia both before and after the procedure. Because of the intensity of the effects of IV sedation, you will not be allowed to drive following the procedure, and you need to plan to have someone available to drive them home.
