Gum Disease

Gum disease is identified in three stages. The first level of gum disease is called gingivitis, and the second level called periodontitis. The third, final, and most serious stage of the disease is advanced periodontitis. Diagnosing and treating periodontal disease promptly will both stymie and abate the progression.

Periodontal therapy encompasses a range of surgical and non-surgical techniques available at Traynor Periodontics & Implants which are designed to address gum disease. This condition can cause infection or inflammation of your gums and result in gum recession and jawbone deterioration.

Traynor Periodontics & Implants provides a variety of surgical and non-surgical services for the treatment of periodontal issues. We are well-known for our excellent communication style and warm presence. We are extremely effective with all clinical practices due to our consistent engagement with the innovative, technological improvements in the dental industry. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary. Call Traynor Periodontics & Implants at 203-661-5885 with any questions or to make an appointment to evaluate possible gum disease.

Gum disease is a progressive infection

Types of Gum Disease

Gum disease is a progressive infection that will gradually increase in severity. If you develop periodontal disease it happens in the following order:

Gingivitis

The earliest stage of periodontitis, gingivitis, develops due to bacterial plaque that accumulates on your teeth and comes into contact with your gums. The signs usually include gums that are sensitive, red, and puffy, and bleed easily. Gingivitis can be reversed with a proper cleaning by Traynor Periodontics & Implants and improved oral health care at home. If not addressed, it will escalate quickly.

Early Periodontitis

This stage is caused by the continued build-up of harmful bacterial plaque when gingivitis is left untreated. Early periodontitis is indicated by symptoms that are like gingivitis, just more severe. Your gums feel painful and are more sensitive, and the brushing and flossing of your teeth results in bleeding. Unlike gingivitis, which can be addressed with a cleaning and improved self-care, early periodontitis will require more intensive interventions, like scaling, root planing, and even laser gum treatment.

Advanced Periodontitis

When bacteria and plaque have developed such that gum tissue is being destroyed, you have now reached advanced periodontitis. If you have reached this point, you now have small pockets between your teeth and gums, which provide a convenient breeding ground for additional bacteria. With additional bacteria, these pockets expand causing the gums to recede. If left untreated, this recession will result in bone loss.

Periodontal Therapy Options

Treat Gum Disease and Gum Recession

There are a variety of surgical and non-surgical periodontal therapy options available at Traynor Periodontics & Implants that will successfully reverse the impact of gum disease, reduce the likelihood of tooth loss, prevent tooth extractions, and even reduce the need for dental bone grafts.

Common periodontal therapy procedures include the following:

Scaling and Root Planing

This is a common procedure which involves a deep cleaning, removing plaque and tartar that has developed on the teeth below your gum line. Scaling is the removal of plaque from your teeth, where root planing is the smoothing of the roots surfaces to help eliminate bacteria and speed up the healing process.

Periodontal Laser Treatment

This is a procedure that removes gum tissue that has become diseased by using a laser. You might want to consider this option because unlike traditional treatments, laser treatment causes less gum shrinkage and less discomfort.

Periodontal Plastic Surgery

This is a reshaping procedure performed to improve the aesthetic appearance of your gum tissue.

Dental Implants

The dental implant process starts with the extraction of a decayed or damaged tooth that is the result of advanced gum disease. An x-ray is taken to determine if there is sufficient jawbone to successfully support a dental implant. If you are a viable candidate, a small titanium post will be surgically placed into your jawbone. After this has bonded to the bone, the replacement tooth or bridge will be placed on this post as a replacement restoration.

Preventing Gum disease with Proper Daily Oral Hygiene

Oral Hygiene Can Prevent Gum Disease

Gum disease can usually be avoided, provided you practice good oral hygiene habits. If you adhere to the following best practices, you can usually avoid or reduce any gum disease:

Brush twice daily

Brush twice daily and practice proper brushing techniques. In addition to brushing two minutes each time, it is also important to brush effectively. Our staff at Traynor Periodontics & Implants will inform you about proper brushing techniques. This simple daily task removes plaque, preventing damaging buildups.

Floss daily

If you tend to avoid flossing, you may want to reconsider this. Flossing removes plaque from those hard-to-reach areas between your teeth.

Be mindful of your diet

Another way to prevent dental problems is to avoid foods that are sugary or high in starch. If you enjoy sugary beverages, try using a straw to limit the exposure of the sugar to your teeth. It is also beneficial to swish with water following meals to dislodge food remnants.

Schedule regular dental exams

Unchecked dental problems will result in additional issues and the progression of decay, which is why it is suggested to visit Traynor Periodontics & Implants for preventative exams every six months. We will provide professional cleanings of your teeth and diagnose any potential issues before they progress, making these regular checkups critical in maintaining your oral health.
