A treatment for periodontal disease
Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling is the removal of plaque from your teeth, where root planing is the smoothing of the roots surfaces to help eliminate bacteria and speed up the healing process.
By smoothing the root, healing will be accelerated, and the development of additional bacteria will be significantly reduced.
Scaling and root planing is a common procedure if you have periodontal disease. Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is the inflammation of the soft tissue as a result of the bacteria present in the plaque. If left untreated the periodontal disease will result in the deterioration of the jawbone and even loss of a tooth.
Traynor Periodontics & Implants provides a variety of surgical and non-surgical services for the treatment of periodontal issues. We are well-known for our excellent communication style and warm presence. We are extremely effective with all clinical practices due to our consistent engagement with the innovative, technological improvements in the dental industry. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary. Call Traynor Periodontics & Implants at 203-661-5885 with any questions or to make an appointment for a scaling and root planing procedure.
If the team at Traynor Periodontics & Implants has diagnosed you with a periodontal disease, we will schedule a professional cleaning followed by a scaling and root planing treatment. During the procedure, the plaque and calculus will be removed which allows the gums to heal and the pockets around the teeth to shrink. Periodontal therapy refers to a variety of surgical and non-surgical techniques that are designed to treat periodontal disease, which starts as an infection or inflammation of the gums and can result in jawbone deterioration. Scaling and root planing can be a beneficial solution for you if you are looking for a long-term answer for improving the health and aesthetic appearance of your smile.
Three stages of gum disease
The Types of Gum Disease
Periodontal disease is a progressive problem that can gradually increase in severity. Most patients we see at Traynor Periodontics & Implants develop periodontal disease in the following order:
The first stage of gum disease, gingivitis, develops due to bacterial plaque that builds up next to the gums. The symptoms are sensitive gums that are puffy, red, and bleed easily. This stage can be easily reversed with a professional cleaning and your improved oral health care, but if it is not addressed quickly, it will quickly advance into the next stage.
Early periodontitis is caused by the continued build-up of plaque. Early periodontitis has the same symptoms as gingivitis, just more severe. The gums now become painful and more sensitive and brushing and flossing will cause your gums to bleed. Unlike gingivitis, early periodontitis will now require more intensive interventions.
When bacteria and plaque have accumulated to the point that your gum tissue is being destroyed, you have advanced periodontitis. If it has progressed to this point small pockets around your teeth increase, which accelerate the problem as they serve as breeding grounds for even more bacteria. These pockets expand which then cause the gums to recede. These recessions can result in bone loss.
Proper Oral Hygiene Will Extend the positive effects of your
Scaling and Root Planing
To enjoy the benefits of your scaling and root planing procedure, continue to practice good oral hygiene habits every day.
Brush teeth twice a day and also utilize proper brushing techniques. In addition to brushing regularly for two minutes each time, also brush effectively. Our staff at Traynor Periodontics & Implants will answer any questions you may have about proper brushing techniques.
Floss daily for better ongoing oral health.
An effortless way to prevent dental problems from developing is to avoid too much sugar or starch. If you do drink soft drinks or sugary beverages, consider a straw to limit the exposure of sugar to your teeth. It is also beneficial to swish your mouth with water after meals. This will dislodge food remnants that can create problems.
Dental issues can easily develop and create decay. It is important to be preventative and visit Traynor Periodontics & Implants every six months. We will provide professional cleanings and diagnose any issues before they progress. These easy, regular checkups are critical to maintaining your oral health.
