TMJ Treatment
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, and that is your jaw joint. Everyone has two of these joints, both left and right. TMJ syndrome or TMD, temporomandibular disorder, is a medical issue related to the proper function of this jaw joint. The common symptoms are usually a popping or clicking in your jaw joint which can be accompanied by jaw joint or muscle pain, headaches, a jaw that will lock in position or is difficult to open, ringing in your ears, and even some numbness in your face.
Traynor Periodontics & Implants provides a variety of surgical and non-surgical services for the treatment of periodontal issues. We are well-known for our excellent communication style and warm presence. We are extremely effective with all clinical practices due to our consistent engagement with the innovative, technological improvements in the dental industry. We pride ourselves on the fact that we are very conservative in our treatment recommendations and limit surgery to the areas where it is absolutely necessary. Call Traynor Periodontics & Implants at 203-661-5885 with any questions or to make an appointment for an evaluation for TMJ Treatment.

What Causes TMJ
Your TMJ disorder can be the result of a variety of factors, including the following:
- Bruxism, the grinding of your teeth.
- A dislocated joint.
- A jaw injury.
- A neck injury.
- A filling or a crown that were incorrectly placed.
- A malocclusion or bad bite alignment.
Traynor Periodontics & Implants can also diagnose TMJ from arthritis or following some facial trauma, but it is quite often the result of genetic predisposition or even excessive levels of stress, which is why the TMJ disorder is common in high stress professions.
TMJ Problems More Prevalent in Women
TMJ pain is approximately four times more common in women than it is in men. Women report more TMJ symptoms and often have the associated headache and jaw clenching problems. Men report less pain and discomfort, but teeth grinding is more likely to be evident.
Custom Fit Nightguard
A custom fit nightguard is a common and successful treatment option. To maximize results and increase your chances of a successful treatment, it is essential that you have a nightguard that is customized to fit your mouth. A primary reason for a custom fit nightguard from Traynor Periodontics & Implants versus a one size fits all option is because everyone has a different dental structure, and TMJ will present itself differently in each case. You might be primarily clenching, where another patient is grinding, and a third could be clenching and grinding. Although it will be a tiny bit costlier, and more time is consumed to have a custom guard designed, it is wise to seek treatment that is designed to meet your unique needs.
